  •  Not currently be judged by a court to be "incompetent to vote".
  •  Give up your right to vote in any other place.

Deadlines for preregistration are 10 days before a primary or general  election and 11 days before any other election. Under Iowa law you may also register in your precinct on election day.

Registration  forms can be found in libraries and post offices.  Voters may also  visit the Johnson County Auditor's Office, located at:

             Iowa City, IA 52240

Or download a registration form and return it by mail.

When registering on election day, two forms of identification must be provided at the polling place:

  • A recent photo ID (example: Driver's License)

  Request an Early Ballot
Early  voting can be accomplished in person or by mail.  Early voting occurs  at the Auditor's Office for several weeks prior to an election.   Multiple satellite voting locations are also opened around the county  in days before the election. Voters may use any of these satellite sites  at their convenience. Early voting is encouraged for all voters.

Voting by mail requires an absentee ballot request.  To request a ballot, download and complete this absentee ballot request form .  Mail or hand deliver the request to the Johnson County Auditor's Office no later than Friday before the election:

        Johnson County Auditor
913 South Dubuque Street, Suite 101
        Iowa City, IA 52240

Upon receiving your request, and when ballots are available, an absentee ballot and instructions will be mailed to you.

The ballot must be returned, either by mail or in person,  whether it is voted or not. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked  by the day before the election and received prior to the official  canvass in order to be counted. Ballots may also be returned in person  to the Auditor's Office prior to the close of the polls on Election Day.

Voters  that wish to vote on election day, but have requested an absentee  ballot, may surrender the absentee ballot and receive a regular ballot  at the polling place.  In that case the absentee ballot will not be  counted.

Questions about early ballots?  Call the Auditor at  (319) 356-6004 or click here.
